自分が前向きな人間だからか、初めてこの曲を聴いた時は、結構マジでThomのことが、心配になったものだ。
「生きづらそうで大丈夫？」て…まあ、母性愛が強いんでね(笑)。
それに、この前のアルバム『Pablo Honey』が、後ろ向き加減が半端ないアルバムだったと言うのもあるだろう
その上を行く暗さがこの曲にはある。
だから不穏な感じがしたのだ。
「死んじゃいそう」なんてビデオを見ながら思ったわ。
でも全然、大丈夫〜🙆♀️
実際は、アルバムが売れまくり。アメリカでも前作同様、大ヒット。ますます有名バンドになった。
当時の同じ様に話題になったバンド達は、解散、或いはいなくなってしまった、彼らより陽気だったのに。
Radioheadは生きている。
特にThom Yorkeは、多作な人だから暇なし。あちこちで活動している。
そう思うと人間て不思議。
結局、見かけでは分からないということ。
1人の人間の言動だけでは、本質はなかなか見抜けない。
実際、本人でさえ自分の本質など100%分かってる人はいないだろう。
何が嬉しくて何が悲しいのか？
経験し感じて、人は、思いを吐き出しながら進んでいく。
そうやって、今までとは違った自分や変わらぬ自分の本質とを行きつ戻りつして、本当の自分の心を探し、生きていく。
それが人間ってものなのだろう。

"High and Dry" is a song by the English alternative rock band Radiohead, and was the first single released from their second album "The Bends". It was as a double A-side with album opener "Planet Telex". "High and Dry" was released in the UK on 5 March 1995 and remains one of the band's most popular radio hits, despite reaching only #17 upon release.
"High and Dry" was recorded during the "Pablo Honey" sessions but was dismissed by the band, who thought that it sounded like a Rod Stewart song. However, during the sessions for "The Bends" it was rediscovered and remastered, as it was felt that it worked well with the rest of the album's content. The version that appears on the album is the original demo; it was never re-recorded.
The song is widely regarded as Radiohead's most accessible pop hit, and was a live favorite, though it has not been performed in a decade.

この曲は、チャートで17位までしか上がらなかった曲なのだが、実際にはRadioheadの曲の中では1番人気のラジオヒット曲になっている。
ビデオもバンドが、カメラに向かってひたすらプレイしているだけのシンプルなものでありながら、歌詞の感情の昂りに合わせるかのように雨が降ったり、上がったり、カメラの焦点があったかと思えば、わざとぶれたり、カットされたりと非常に計算されたものになっている。
パッと一目で見た感じと、回数を重ね見た印象とは違う可能性を秘めた味い深いミュージックビデオだと思う。

【High and Dry】は、前作『Publo Honey』のセッション中に出来た曲で、当時、デモ作品として扱われた。何故せっかく出来たのにアルバムに入らなったかと言うと、聴いた時にメンバー達が、Rod Stewartの曲みたいに聞こえる、と言ったから止めたのだ。
セカンド・アルバム『The Bends』からのファースト・シングル。 アルバムのオープニング トラック「Planet Telex」とともに両 A 面でリリースもされた。

だがこの曲が入っている2nd アルバム『The Bend』のセッション中に、アルバムの残りの曲と合わせたら上手く機能すると考え、再発見されてリマスターされたのだ。因みにアルバム収録の【High and Dry 】は、オリジナルのデモヴァージョンになる。再レコーディングはされていない。
先程触れたように、この曲は人気があり、Radioheadの曲の中では、最もアクセスしやすいと広く認められていて、ライブでも大人気だった。が、10年以上、演奏されなかった、不思議な曲である。
2007年のPitchfork Media とのインタビューで、Thome Yorke は、「この曲が好きではない」と述べていて、その後に「悪くはない… とても悪い」と言っている。
彼はまた、アルバム『The Bends』 に曲を含めるように圧力をかけられたとも述べている。大人の事情と言うことなのか？
歌詞について Lyrics
出だしの歌詞にあるJumpは、普通ならば飛ぶと言う意味。だが、イギリスの一部の地域でのJag (性交)のスラングでもある。Lyraはスラングが得意と言うか好きなのでいつも2パターンを説明しているが、この曲はスラングの方が意味に違和感がないため、セックスしたと和訳したのだ。
これは、話をしている人、対話者が「1週間で2回寝た(セックスした)」ことを意味している。が、それは７日間で2人の違う相手と寝ていた場合だ。
また、ダブルミーニングになるが、７日間のうち2回も、万引きや盗みをしていたと言う意味もある。
語り手によって、侮辱にされた少年は、説得力のない方法で、自分を自慢しようとしているのだ。
嘘かまことか？下手すると妄想。真実で自慢しているならば良いが、侮辱された腹いせで嘘をついているならば人格が危ういのが見て取れる部分だ。
そして、その危うさは更に深刻化している。
人によるが、この世には自分自身にもっと注意を向けるためだけに、自傷行為をしたり自らを殺してしまう可能性が高い男性や女性が存在する。
例え、それが嘘であっても彼らは、それを自慢し始め、自分自信をきずつけたり殺し、その嘘の上に構築されてしまう。暗く苦しい話だ。
それなのに、彼らは名声を得ようと懸命に努力する。
そして達成するためにあらゆる事を試すのだ。
だが、その追求の中で彼らは生意気になり、自己中になり、次々と醜悪なものへと変化して行くことになる。

【Flyin' on your motorcycle】の歌詞では アメリカの命知らずな Evel Knievel (ライダー)と言える。
運転手(車)がバイクを遮断したり、ライダーとの衝突と繋がる可能性があるミスをしたりすると一部のモーターサイクリストは、車の側面に近づき、ドライバーの鏡を装甲手袋で殴り、認めないことを示したりする。
もしその意味ならば、「別の鏡を割った」と歌詞にあるため、何回も認めないと割っているのだろう。
この歌詞の部分は、語り手が困難な状況で自分の感情を最大限に活用していることを表す。
その後の歌詞では、彼がいつも直ぐに怒る奴ではない、と暗喩している。
印象的に繰り返すサビでは、誰かを1人にして行動出来ない事を意味する海軍の決まり文句「High & Dry」を拝借したようだ。高くて乾いた、の意味ではないよ。元の意味は、実際に海岸に放置された座礁した船を指す表現だ。だが、この言葉は今ではより多くの意味を持つ。
かつて貴方の慰めのライナスの毛布みたいだった誰か、または何かが去った時に、無力感に対する希望や欲求不満なしに立ち往生することを意味する時もある。
彼は、一緒に過ごす事が出来る実在する人々がいなければ、彼の蓄積された富と名声が平凡である事に気づくのだ。
または、主人公は、これ以上のものを手に入れることが出来ずに、彼を影響下に置かないように求めているのかもしれない。
2番の出だしは、Radioheadのことを意味しているようだ。この作曲あたりの期間中、メンバーはツアーの問題を抱えていた。
この聖句は、頂上に到達する問題を意味しているようだ。ほとんどの人は、一度「やり遂げた」と自由が制限されていることに気づかなくても人生は全て上手くいくと考えている。
「お前は話すことができない人になるだろう」は、それを引き起こした人々が、不平を言うと他の人々は、彼らの世界の所有物を理解できず、彼らを非難する。
「アイツらはお前に唾を吐く人々だ」は、その意味からくるセリフだ。
したがって人々と会話が出来ないことは、彼らが偽りの言葉を残したから彼らを憎々しく思っているのだ。
親しい人間関係は、歌の登場人物に起こる最高のものだ。
だが、最初の歌詞で分かるように、彼らの馬鹿げた、ふざけた態度は、人々を追い払ってしまい、今では呪っている。
そして名声があることが判明した贈り物を残しているだけだ。
名声と愛。
どちらも手に入り難いものなのだろうか？
この曲を聴いていると「無理だ」と見せられているみたいだ。
たが、考えようによっては、受け手が疑心暗鬼にならなければ、スルー出来る問題であり、両方を手にできると思う。
「ポジティブな人間だから、そうおもうんだよ」とネガティブさんに言われそうだが、自分自身が変われば状況は変わるんだよ。
実体験からそう思う。
この曲を書いた時のThomは、名声はあっても嫌な人間関係しかない、もしくは、悪い方が目についたのだくさだったのでは？
人間そんな時期もあるよ。
そんな時は、嫌な奴らは切り捨てて。
周りに当たり散らしたり、虚言癖は見苦しい(歌詞の主人公みたいに)。
それよりは自分らしく生きていれば良い。
手に入れたものを手にして、今やれることをすれば良い。
そうしているうちに、なりたい自分になれる。

In a 2007 interview with Pitchfork Media, Yorke stated that he did not like the song, saying “It’s not bad… it’s very bad”. He also stated that he had been pressured into including the song on The Bends.
Many possible interpretations.
“Jump” is a slang for a shag (a fuck) in some parts of the UK. It could mean that the interlocutor did "two jumps in a week” as in slept with two different girls in a space of seven days. Or maybe he shoplifted or stole something twice in a week. Or he did two motorcycle stunt jumps a single week. Other allegories could also apply. In any case, the “boy”, demeaned by the narrator is trying to boast himself in an unconvincing way.
When drivers cut off motorcyclists or make a mistake that could have resulted in a collision with the rider, some motorcyclists will ride up close to the side of the car and punch the driver's with ride up closedriver's mirror with armored gloves to show their disapproval. This lyric implies that the narrator is letting his emotions get the best of him in difficult situations. The next lyric implies that he was not always so quick to anger.
Think of the guy or girl that’ll do something that could hurt or kill them just to bring more attention to themselves. They begin to brag about it, even if it is a lie, and end up being built upon that lie.

Trying hard for fame, they tried doing all sorts of things to achieve it. However, in the pursuit they became self-centered and slowly began to change into something ugly.
The “Flyin' on your motorcycle” could allude to Evel Knievel an American daredevil.
This references the naval cliche “high and dry” which means to leave someone alone and unable to act. The original meaning refers to beached ships that were indeed left dry on the shore.
But it also may have more connotations. The phrase could refer to being stranded without hope or frustration over helplessness upon a departure of someone or something that used to be your blanket of solace. He finds his amassed wealth and fame banal without the real people whom he can spend it with.
Or maybe the narrator may be asking not to leave him under the influence without the ability to get more.
The relationship is the best thing to happen to the character in the song, yet as was discovered in the first verse. their idiotic antics drove them away and they are now left with the gift that turned out to be a curse, fame.
