Real History

=Cult of Personality=

[Intro: Malcolm X]

And during the few moments that we have left, we want to talk, right down to earth, in a language that everybody here can easily understand

[Verse 1]

Look in my eyes, what do you see?

The cult of personality

I know your anger, I know your dreams

I've been everything you wanna be, oh

[Pre-Chorus 1]

I'm the cult of personality

Like Mussolini and Kennedy

I'm the cult of personality, the cult of personality

The cult of personality

[Chorus 1]

Neon lights, Nobel Prize

When a mirror speaks, the reflection lies

You won't have to follow me

Only you can set me free

[Verse 2]

I sell the things you need to be, I'm the smiling face of your TV, oh

I'm the cult of personality

I exploit you, still you love me, I tell you one and one makes three

I'm the cult of personality

[Pre-Chorus 2]

Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi, oh

I'm the cult of personality, the cult of personality

The cult of personality

[Chorus 2]

Neon lights, Nobel Prize

When a leader speaks, that leader dies

He won't have to follow me

Only you can set you free

[Guitar Solo]

[Outro]

You gave me fortune, you gave me fame

You gave me power in your God's name

I'm every person you need to be

Oh, I'm, the, cult, of, per, so, na, lity

I am the cult of, I am the cult of, I am the cult of, I am the cult of

I am the cult of, I am the cult of, I am the cult of, I am the cult of

Personality

Spoken Outro: John F. Kennedy & Franklin D. Roosevelt]

Ask not what your country can do for you

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself

【Cult of Personality】

Cult of personality

Rage Against The MachineのTom Morelo(  (Audioslave、Profet of Rage)は、「【Cult of Personality】という曲を初めて聞いたとき、明らかにレッド・ツェッペリンを愛し、細断したいと思っているアフリカ系アメリカ人が他にもいることに、私は完全に圧倒されました。

When mirror speaks〜

You don't have to〜は、個人崇拝は事実上、嘘だ、と言っている。 You won’t have to follow me
Only you can set you free

i exploit you still love meは、人格崇拝の中心は文字通り何でもでき、信者を害するような方法で利用することさえできると言うことだ。

I tell you one〜

I'm cult personality

Like Joseph Starlin

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself

This classic 1988 song was released as the lead single off the group’s debut studio album Vivid.

The band's guitarist and founder, Vernon Reid, described the song as very special for the band not just for its commercial success but because it was essentially written in just one rehearsal session. The riff was stumbled upon while practicing something else and by the end of the session they had written what was to become their best known song. The title comes from a psychological phenomenon called cult of personality, and the lyrics contain many political references.

The song was ranked No. 69 on VH1's 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. The solo was ranked No. 87 in Guitar World's "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" list. It was selected for inclusion in the musical reference book, 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die: And 10,001 You Must Download.

“Cult Of Personality” is a reference to a February 1956 speech by Russian leader Khrushchev titled On the Cult of Personality and its Consequences in which he condemned previous Russian leader Joseph Stalin’s use of oppression and brutality.

This song describes how leaders present themselves in order to obtain devotion from the masses, and how this can be a good and/or bad thing. Each verse gives two examples of how that is the case and also features audio samples of speeches from different politicians and activists including Malcolm X, John F. Kennedy and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

“Cult Of Personality” remains the group’s most commercially successful single in the US, peaking at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1989. Overseas, the song reached #3 in New Zealand and was a minor hit in Australia and the UK. The band won a Grammy Award for the song in 1990 under the category of Best Hard Rock Performance.

In recent years, the song has re-entered popular culture as being the entrance theme for former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and current All Elite Wrestling (AEW) wrestler CM Punk. The band performed it at Wrestlemania 29 for CM Punk's entrance.

Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Prophets of Rage) told The Ringer:

When I first heard the song “Cult of Personality,” I was absolutely blown away that clearly there were other African-Americans who unapologetically loved Led Zeppelin and wanted to shred. [The record]opened the doors to my career.

Cult of Personality" prominently includes several audio samples of speeches from 20th-century political leaders.

The song begins with an edited quote from the beginning of "Message to the Grass Roots", a speech by Malcolm X: "... And during the few moments that we have left, ... We want to talk right down to earth in a language that everybody here can easily understand."

During a rest in the music at 4:35, John F. Kennedy's inaugural address is heard ("Ask not what your country can do for you ...").

The song ends with Franklin D. Roosevelt saying "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself", from his first inaugral address.

The lyrics mention Kennedy, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, and Mahatma Gandhi. According to Vernon Reid, Adolf Hitler was originally also in the lyrics but was pulled due to fear that referring to him would be misconstrued and too controversial.

A cult of personality arises “when a leader is represented as larger-than-life through imagery and words of uncritical praise and flattery.” It is connected to charismatic authority and similar to hero worship, although a cult of personality is usually established through propaganda and mass media.

Living Colour juxtaposes two examples of a cult of personality – John F. Kennedy and Benito Mussolini– and demonstrates the concept’s political range.

Neon nights→ Neon lights highlight how celebrities in entertainment are similar to leaders with cults of personality in it that the purpose of the cult of personality and an entertainer are to amuse and distract from the substance of the person.

The Nobel (Peace) Prize is an award given annually to someone who has done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.

Alfred Nobel was a war profiteer. He invented the prizes to warp the perception of his enduring legacy into one of peace rather than violence.

By the time he wrote his will[and outlined the framework for the Nobel Prizes], Nobel was hugely wealthy and owned nearly 100 factories that made explosives and munitions.

This is a reference to what is known in advertising as lifestyle marketing. Lifestyle marketing is a marketing technique that positions the product or service to possess ideals, aspirations, and aesthetics that the target audience identifies with. In layman’s terms, it means that brands marketed in this way are a way of life for their audience. They are immersive, encapsulate their customers’ ideas or values, and fit seamlessly into the consumer’s life. Close your eyes and think of your favorite brand. Maybe it’s that athletic company that’s inspired you since you were a kid. Or maybe it’s that makeup brand that you’ve purchased religiously since high school. Chances are if you thought of a brand you’re attached to, it took lifestyle marketing to get you there.

I tell you one

This line refers to a scene in George Orwell’s book 1984 where the protagonist is tortured by a state official until he admits that 2+2=5, despite it not being true.

I'm cult personality

A cult of personality occurs when one “uses mass media, propaganda, or other methods, to create an idealized, heroic, and, at times god-like public image, often through unquestioning flattery and praise.” In sociology, it is the equivalent of charismatic authority and similar to “hero worship”, although a cult of personality is usually established through propaganda and mass media.

Again, we are given two opposing figures, one who is “good” and one who is “bad” pointing out that both people were held to an unreasonable and cultish high manner

Like Joseph Starlin〜

A cult of personality can span the political spectrum. Stalin is generally viewed as an evil dictator while Gandhi is seen as a non-violent liberator of his people.

Ask not

Ask not what your country can do for you

This is part of a quote from USA president John F Kennedy’s inaugural address from the year 1961.

The full quote is the following:

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country

・The only thing we have to fear is fear itself

This is an excerpt from US President Roosevelt’s Inauguration Speech regarding the Great Depression.

His point was for Americans to not give into their worries about the future, because that will render the people powerless. Avoid succumbing to fear and people can then recover and prosper again.

Professional wrestler and mixed martial artist CM Punk has used the song as his entrance music in WWE, Ring of Honor, Ultimate Fighting Championship, and All Elite Wrestling.
It is marked as part of GTA San Andreas Soundtrack for Radio X
It is used in The Walking Dead (TV Series)series finale "Rest in Peace"
