現在もソロ活動で大活躍しているLiam。
最近は丸くなってパパらしくなっている。微笑ましいし、プライベートでどん底だった数年前のLiamとはまるっきり違う。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、イングランド、マンチェスター出身のシンガーソングライター、ヴォーカリスト、Liam Gallagher リアム・ギャラガー
(本名 William John Paul Gallagher 1972年9月21日)。

イングランドの代表的なバンド 元 Oasisの リードヴォーカリストであり、時々、作詞作曲1991年から2009年まで活躍。時々、作曲業もこなしていたが、解散してからは2009年から2014年までBeadie Eyeでワールドツアーに回るなど活躍。そして2017年からソロ活動を始める。
今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、1994年10月10日にリリースされたOasisのデビューアルバム『Definitely Maybe 』に収録されている4th シングル【Cigarettes and Alcohol】。

William John Paul Gallagher (born 21 September 1972) is an English singer and songwriter. He achieved fame as the lead vocalist and part time songwriter of the rock band Oasis from 1991 to 2009, and later fronted the rock band Beady Eye

"Cigarettes & Alcohol" is a song by English rock band Oasis, written by Noel Gallagher. It was released on 10 October 1994 as the fourth and final single from their debut album Definitely Maybe (1994), and their second to enter the UK top ten in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 7 (three places higher than "Live Forever"), eventually spending 79 weeks on the charts. On 13 March 2020, 26 years after release, the song was certified Platinum, indicating 600,000 sales.

【Cigarettes & Alcohol】とは
【Cigarettes & Alcohol】は、Noel Gallagher 作で、全英チャートで2番目にトップ10に入った曲。1994年。Brit Popが始まった年。(Grunge ブームが終わった年でもあるな、と想うと泣けて来る… Kurt〜〜！！)
イングランドでは、7 位。あの【Live Forever】より 3 位高いと言うのだから、、、なんとも言えぬ。
最終的にチャートで 79 週間をキープ。 リリースから 26 年後の 2020 年 3 月 13 日、プラチナ認定を受け、600,000 の売り上げているのだから、長く愛されてきたビッグヒットソングなのだ。
パクリ疑惑。
これは、ノエル・ギャラガーが自分のメッセージを伝えるために書かなければならないと感じた3曲のうちの1曲。
残りの2曲は【Rock'n'Roll Star】と【Live Forever】。
よく噂されている話だが、この曲のメインリフが、T.rex の【Get It On (Bang A Gong)】のギターリフと非常によく似ていることだ。
個人的にはファズってだけでそんな話題にするほどか？と思うがOasisパクリソングのなかでは、1番有名な曲かもね。

因みにこの曲は、Oasisが盗作で告発された2番目の事件である。パクリは犯罪ですから。最初の事件は、【Shaker Maker】。こちらは、メインリフが、Chuck Berry の【Little Queeny】から取った【Get It On】。あとつけ足せば、Eddie Cochranの【Come On Everybody】にも似ている。
そう言えば、2014年のOasis の『definitely maybe 』という本で、アレックス・ニーヴンは【Cigarette & Alcoholを「12小節のブルース・ロック・ソング」および「ローリング・ストーンズの反逆者ロックの原型を古典主義的に煮詰めたもの」と表現。良い褒め方だが、的を得ていると感じた。
この元ネタと言われているT-Rexの【Get It On】も某有名ブルーズマンのChuck Berry (某ではないね、言っちゃった)のギターリフをパクった訳で、、、なんだか複雑なの。
チラッと思ったのだが、これLiamじゃなくて他の人が歌っていたら違ったかなと。もっとオリジナルには思えなかっだ気がする、、ただのパクリソングになっていたかもしれない。
何故なら、あのミャーミャーした粘っこい歌い方であの声だから、全てを払拭してしまうオリジナルの作品になってしまったのではないだろうか？
誰も真似ができない声、歌い方。アティチュード。そして、あの眉毛な…。
リリース戦略
バンドの最初の 2 つのシングル【Supersonic】と【Shakermaker】では、サイケデリックなイメージが使用され、3 rd シングル【Live Forever】では、よりソフトなコードと優しさと愛で溢れた歌詞で構成。そしてこの4thシングル【Cigarettes & Alcohol】では、Oasis が推進しているラフでワイルドな音楽的アティチュードを表現して世界に示したと思う。さまざまなバンドの顔を見せたようだ。これは、本人たちが考えたのか、Alan Mcgeeが考えたのか、バンドが型にはまらないレンジの広さを音楽ファンに見せつけることが出来た要因だろう。ある意味、新人俳優を売り出すまえのエージェントがよくやるイメージ戦略みたいだ。

【Cigarettes & Alcohol】は、ロッド・スチュワートの1998年のアルバム『ホエン・ウィー・ワー・ザ・ニュー・ボーイズ』でカヴァーされている。
このアルバムのオープニング・トラックとなっている。他にもオーケストラやPop ソングでカヴァーが多い。
歌詞について
この歌は、労働者階級の生活を表現している曲だ。労働者階級の平凡で一見、無益にみえ、その救いのない性質への救済策として、タバコ、アルコール、およびその他の薬物の固有の魅力を宣言している曲なのだ。
「働く価値がないのに、自分で仕事を見つける苦労をする価値があるか？」のセリフ(歌詞)は、かなり後ろ向きで無気力。しかし、明るい未来を見ることが出来ないイギリスの労働者階級の若者の本音なのだ。
1994年も2024年も(今は2022年だが)20年経とうがなんだろうが、結局は、何も変わらないと言うことか?
希望をもてない若者の先の見えない時のどん底気分と言ったら。無気力な人間を生み出すには充分な原因だろう。逃げずに自分と、世間とも戦うか、タバコや酒に逃げるか？は、 本人次第だ。
つまり、この曲は、1990 年代の一般的な人間の、幻滅した感情を取り上げている歌詞なのだ。誰かの気持ちを代弁出来る歌詞は売れるとLyraは毎度書いてきたが、この曲もそのパワーがある。
バンドを発見したAlan Mcgeeは、この曲を最初に聞いたとき、「過去25年間で最も偉大な社会的声明の1つ」であると騒々しく主張していた、、、正解だ。
より詳しいく知りたい方へ
歌詞の中にある Action とは、一般的には活動や、興奮を意味するが、時に時間の経過に寄って何かが起きるか、も意味する。
Noelが育った郊外では、何も起きていなかった。だから、他にやることは、ただ一つ。外に出て無駄になりながら鳥を拾うだけ、、、この文章は、アイルランド語のcraicを連想させるが、娯楽なし=無駄になる時間と言う意味だ。兄貴がアイルランド語を狙ったのか、たまたまか？
アイルランド系だから知っている筈だから言葉遊びをしたのかな?とLyraは思っています。

Noelは、この曲について次のように語っている。
「【Rock 'n' Roll Star】、【Live Forever】、]Cigarettes & Alcohol】で言いたかったことは、ほぼすべて要約してしまったが、その後は別の方法で繰り返すよ」
あとは、言いたいことは同じだから、うまく使い回すと言う意味なんだろうけど、はっきり言い過ぎていて笑ってしまう。
素直と言うか、嘘がつけない性格。もしくは単細胞かもしれないが、嘘をつかない人が好きだからNoelのこのら馬鹿正直さには心からLoveなLyraなのです。性格悪い人大嫌いだけどが、NoelもLiamも口が悪いだけ。性格は普通な人たちと同じで優しくて良いところもあれば悪いところもある、と言う感じ。しかし、まあ、この口の悪さは、世間では嫌われそう、、、これは、生きづらいだろうな。
今はセレブだから許されていてokだが。
確かにNoel自身が言うように、Oasis 時代は、似たメッセージをずっと書いていた。色々あったことは有名だから説明はしないが、Noelも「言いたいことは、作品へ出し尽くしたし、喧嘩ばかりで居場所がないし、嫌だから、やめよう」と、なったのだろう。
なるべくしての解散。
この場合、Liamと仲直りをしても、やらないだろう。
ソロで成功もしているしね。
寂しい気はするがLyraは2人に仲直りをして欲しいが、oasis自体は再結成しなくて良い。
2人が幸せならば良いからだ。
どうでも良いと言ったら、ファンじゃねーと言う人もいるだろうけど、やり直しなだけのバンドなら再結成しなくて良い。無理矢理、再結成しでも良いものは生まれない。やりたくてたまらないなら嬉しいけど、Noelの今の感じは無理。せそれなら、別々にやったほうが良い。自分のやりたいようにやれる場所で活動すべきだから。何よりもLiamとNoelの幸せを願っているから。
NoelとLiamも、ロック・ザ・ボックスのインタビューでこの曲について語っていたが「タバコや酒の一歩先を行く、コカインの存在も歌詞に出している」のは、暗に言っている(直接、固有名詞は出していない)が、Lyraはストレートに和訳しました。
Noelは、摂取する行為をそのまま歌詞にしているので、ダイレクトに書いた方が良いと思うからだ。
この歌詞のようなどん詰まり生活からは普通は抜け出せない。
余程のラッキーか？血ゲロを吐くほどの辛辣なめたか？

この歌の意味について、Noelは、
「 【Let's Have it】が主な精神だった。すべての曲は、マンチェスターを離れて陽光を浴び、ドラッグを飲み、残りの人生を過ごすことについてのものさ。 【Rock'n'Roll Star】、【Live Forever】、【Cigarettes & Alcohol】。
現実逃避がすべてだよ。片手にビール、もう一方の手に親友を持ち、楽しい時間を過ごそう。」
まるでこれは、闇が深い人、もしくはポッドやってる奴の言い訳みたいなセリフだが(笑)、今はLiamは持病のせいもあり、ドラッグはやめていて、毎日マラソンを続けている。偉いわ、まだ続いているのだから！ だからあのクリスタルメス事件が嘘のように、超ヘルシー人間になっている。(Noelもクリーンになったらしい)
あのLiamが健康のためにマラソンなんて、考えられなかった。人間て変われる、、、性根が腐っていなければ。
そして、意志の強さもあれば変われると思う。そうすれば闇は去るのだろう。
現実逃避は好きじゃないが、たまにはビール片手にOasisもを聴くのもいいかもね。

Cigarettes & Alcohol” was released as the fourth single off Definitely Maybe, October 10th, 1994. In 2006, it was included in the “Best Of”-compilation Stop The Clocks and in 2010 it was included in the singles collection Time Flies…
1994-2009.
This is one of the three songs that Noel Gallagher felt he had to write in order to get his message across – the other two are "Rock 'n’ Roll Star" and "Live Forever".
The song’s main riff bears striking similarities to Marc Bolan’s riff from "Get It On (Bang.A Gong)" by T.Rex.
Action” refers to excitement and activity in general, whatever could happen to pass the time. Since nothing was happening in the suburbs Noel grew up in, apart from one thing, there was only that one thing to do – go out and try to pick up birds while getting wasted. The lines is reminiscent of an Irish word craic, which means almost the same thing, "No amusement = time to get wasted".
Whereas the band's first two singles "Supersomic" and "Shakermaker“ had used psychedelic imagery, and the third single "Live Forever" used softer chords and tender lyrics, "Cigarettes & Alcohol" demonstrated the rougher musical attitude that Oasis appeared to be promoting. The song proclaims the inherent appeal of cigarettes, alcohol, and other drugs as a remedy to the banality and seemingly futile nature of working class life. Lines such as "Is it worth the aggravation to find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for?" taps into a common sentiment of disenchantment in the 1990s. Alan McGee, who discovered the band, boisterously claimed upon first hearing the song that it was "one of the greatest social statements of the past 25 years".
The song was the second case in which Oasis was accused of plagiarism, the first being "Shakermaker". The main riff of the song is lifted from "Get It On" by T.Rex, who themselves took it from "Little Queenie" " by Chuck Berry.It also bears a similarity to the opening of Humble Pie's cover of the Eddie Cochran song "C'mon Everybody".
Covers
Cigarettes & Alcohol" was covered by Rod Stewart for his 1998 album When We Were the New Boys, on which it is the opening track. The song was also performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on Plays the Music Of Oasis, which is part of a series of albums with orchestral interpretations of pop music.

‘Let’s Have it’ was the main ethos. All the songs were about leaving Manchester and ending up in the sunshine, taking drugs and drinking for the rest of your life. ‘Rock 'n’ Roll Star,‘ 'Live Forever,’ Cigarettes and Alcohol. It’s all about escapism – a pint in one hand, your best mate in the other, and just having a good time.
